Why spends hundreds of dollars on synthetic chemicals and hazardous cleaning products when you already have the essential equipment hidden in your pantry?
Here are a few hidden gems in our kitchen that work wonders for easy, non toxic cleaning and deodorizing.
#1 To Deodorize your fridge :
Have you ever opened your refrigerator to be greeted with a souring smell of rotten eggs or fish or just something icky? Yes, of course you have! We all have! But as we have come to realize, just throwing away the culprit of the nasty odor does not get rid of that awful smell nearly as quickly as we had hoped. Well, next time you find yourself holding your nose every time the fridge door is opened, here is what you do:
Leave a slice of white bread on the bottom shelf. The bread absorbs all the nasty odors. Simple. Just make sure you remember to throw the bread away within a couple of days , lest it mildew.
Optional – you may also add a few drops of orange or lemon oil for a fresh, citrusy scent.
Line the bottom shelf of your refrigerator with newspaper scented with your favorite essential oil for lingering freshness!
#2 Need a Rinse Aid for Dishwashers?
Do you find spots on your glassware every time you run them through the dishwasher? This can happen when your water is hard ie: excess of magnesium or calcium deposits can be found in your water. Normally, I would just add a little distilled white vinegar or lime juice in the rinse aid section of my dishwasher. But here is another smart tip for for you , if you ever find yourself in sticky spot:
Brew some Green Tea. Obviously, pour a cup for yourself, but also add a cup to the rinse aid section.
Tea contain tanning acid that breaks down soap residue and leaves your glassware spotless and shiny!
#3 Problems with Garbage disposal?
Throw in a few ice chips to scour the blades. Scouring cleans the walls of the garbage disposal, cuts grease and keeps the motor running problem free.
Add small chicken bones, eggs shells and fruit pits to create effective scouring action.
Freeze vinegar in your ice cube trays and throw some vinegar cubes for double action – scouring and odor elimination.
I always throw some leftover lemon or orange peels into the garbage disposal and turn in on for instant freshness in the air.
#4 Faucets and Fixtures:
Too much grime build up on your faucet?
Use a dry cloth or paper towel, sprinkle some flour on it and scrub off the soap residue and greasy finger marks with ease. The best part – This is a no rinse technique because there is no pasty residue left behind. Just dust off the flour and voila! Your faucets will look as good as new. On a side note, I have noticed that shiny new look is something Scrubbing Bubbles could never seem to achieve with my faucets, there was always residue left!
